Tips for Choosing a Sober Sponsor
A sober sponsor is an extremely important resource for individuals in addiction recovery. A sober sponsor will provide support to help with your recovery journey. When making this decision, you’ll want to take your time in choosing a sponsor that is going to guide you through this time in your life. There are some important factors you’ll want to consider when choosing your sober sponsor.
Men and women in early recovery are encouraged to delay starting a new romantic relationship for at least one year. The reason for this is that you will have a lot going on during this part of your recovery and it is best to put all of your focus on your sobriety. The emotional ups and downs of recovery mixed with a new relationship can lead to triggers and ultimately relapse. Choosing a sponsor of your own gender will help you to place focus where it needs to be, which is on your recovery.
Is your possible sober sponsor someone who is happily sober? If the sponsor is meant to provide support and answer your questions about recovery, they must have been through the same experiences. A sponsor would ideally be a person who has been sober themselves for at least a year. If they are happy while living their sober life, they will display a positive attitude. A sober sponsor having a positive attitude will be able to provide you with the guidance and support you need.
Your potential sponsor should be someone that doesn’t already have too many sponsees. While it may be tempting to choose a sponsor with a large number of sponsees, they may not have enough time to dedicate to everyone. If the sponsor isn’t able to dedicate enough time to each sponsee, the relationship may not be effective.
Choosing a sober sponsor can seem like an overwhelming decision to make, but it doesn’t have to be. A sober sponsor is not a lifetime commitment. If for some reason things don’t work out you can choose another sponsor. There isn’t a need to make choosing a sober sponsor a stressful decision, simply go with your gut.
